Sally Cathcart in Cambridge
|
Summary
The day will kick off with a fast paced 30 minute session where teachers will learn simple chants and songs, playing the games that go with them. Sally will focus on showing how a basic feel and understanding of pulse and rhythm can be taught through the activities.
There will be a chance to calm down during the Lazy Piano Teacher; however, the topic is anything but lazy! Instead teachers will be challenged to consider how to engage pupils in the learning process and why teachers talking less in lessons leads to an increase in pupil motivation. There will be the opportunity for everyone to consider and discuss how to ask the right questions at the right time!
After lunch there will be more songs and games, this time focussing on the development of pitch awareness. Sally will show a video of herself working with a small group of children after which there will be time for everyone to discuss and analyse her teaching. What worked and what didn't work will all be considered and teachers will be encouraged to consider what elements they could incorporate into their own teaching.
Following this Sally will present research and her own thoughts about the introduction of fixed pitch notation to young pupils. Teachers will be introduced to the floor staff, landmark notes, alphabet strings and there will be plenty of time to discuss many of the issues and problems that teachers commonly face.
The day will end with Sally sharing some of her favourite iPad apps that she uses in her piano lessons.
